Warnings & Contraindications
Below is a list of essential oils (many of which we do not use in our skincare preparations) that are contraindicated for certain conditions.
If you have one of these conditions please check against any PCA product ingredient labels you are interested in, to ensure that the product does not contain any of the essential oils listed below.
If in doubt please always contact a qualified aromatherapist or your GP if concerning existing medical conditions.
Pregnancy
It is considered sensible to avoid ALL essential oils in the first trimester.
Essential Oils that may be used after the first trimester of pregnancy:
Bergamot, Cardamon, Cubeb, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Geranium, German Chamomile, Ginger, Grapefruit, Immortelle, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Neroli, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Roman Chamomile, Rose Otto, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Sweet Orange, Vetiver, Yarrow, Ylang Ylang.
Essential Oils that should NOT be used in pregnancy:
Aniseed, Basil, Camphor, Clary Sage*, Virginian and Atlas Cedarwood, Cypress, Dill Seed, Sweet and Bitter Fennel, Hyssop, Jasmine* Juniper, Sweet Marjoram, Myrrh, Nutmeg, parsley leaf and Parsley Seed, Pennyroyal, Peppermint, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme.
*However the essential oils of Jasmine and Clary Sage are safe to use during labour.
If you have any doubts or worries about using essential oils or products containing essential oils, please consult a qualified Aromatherapist experienced in pregnancy and post natal care and/or your midwife.
High Blood Pressure:
It is considered sensible to avoid the use of the following oils, if you suffer from hypertension:
Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme.
Epilepsy
It is considered sensible to avoid the use of the following oils, if you suffer from epilepsy:
Eucalyptus oils, Peppermint, Spearmint, Rosemary, Lavendin, Hyssop, Sage, Camphor, Fennel.
Sensitive or damaged skin
The following oils may cause skin irritations to people with sensitive skin:
Basil, Citronella, Cinamon Leaf and Bark, Clove Leaf, Bud and Stem, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lemon, Lemongrass, May Chang, Thyme, Tea Tree.
If in doubt please consult a qualified Aromatherapist or your GP before using any essential oils or products if you have an existing skin condition.
Phototoxic
The following oils (if used in too high dosage) may cause the skin to burn if exposed to strong ultra violet light:
Bergamot, Lime, Bitter Orange, Lemon and Grapefruit.
Nut Allergy
Some carrier oils may not be suitable for those with nut allergies. Massage oil bases and skin care products available may contain nut oils such as sweet almond. If you have a nut allergy or there is a family history of nut allergy please check product ingredients before purchase and again before using.
If you have any of the listed conditons above, any other pre-existing medical condition or are taking prescriptive medicines, please always ask advice from your GP before using essential oils or products containing them.
